Small pieces.
A clearer picture.

AI models read tokens: small pieces of words, punctuation, or other characters. A token isn’t always a whole word, so word count alone doesn’t tell the full story.

Use the estimate to size up a prompt or compare drafts before sending them. Counts update as you type, with the same estimator checking your text on our server.

This is a planning estimate, not a model-specific billing count. If pasted text contains invisible formatting characters, the Text Cleaner can show what it removes before you count again.

A few clear answers.

Is this an exact token count?

No. TokenX estimates token usage without loading a full tokenizer. A server check confirms the estimate with the same library; it does not make it an exact count. For exact context limits or billing, use your model’s tokenizer and include any system messages and tool definitions.

Can I count code and other languages?

Yes. Paste code, prose, emoji, or multilingual text. Accuracy varies by language and content, especially for scripts without a built-in rule, hashes, and encoded data. Words are counted as groups separated by whitespace; characters are Unicode code points.

Is my text saved?

No. The count appears in your browser immediately. After you pause typing, your text is sent to this site’s server for an in-memory check. This tool has no text database, prompt logs, or external AI calls. Refreshing or leaving the page clears your text.
